Our Top Record of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Place.

On the surface, this album may look more like an arduous university challenge than the latest pop album by a musician whose last hit featured a global K-pop star. Broken into 4 separate movements and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a head-spinning classical-tinged album exploring female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, often via the lens of various women saints. The end of a romance—a theme treated with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched skyward on this record, carried by the lush sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter within a vast list of contributors. The pure audacity alone renders the efforts of contemporary artists appear rather small.

Rising Above Academic Pretense

The fact that Lux succeeds in avoid dry academic chin-stroking is almost a miracle, with complete praise going to Rosalía. While it's not her first album to blend historical sounds with the present, its stakes are far higher on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more pronounced. The element that really elevates her fourth album, outside of its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and engrained drama, proves to be a core sense of joy. Similar to the legendary artist at her height, there is a wondrous quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. When she is tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless want to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth brightly during a stunning piano-led song about Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over several minutes. Then, all the music drops silent, and there's a gleeful giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral crescendo crashes down like comedic impact. The song immediately shifts into the wild track featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album is that the listener rarely exactly know—or even wish to predict—what you will go next."

Nearly every track finishes at a totally distinct place than how it began. One moment explores the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate symphony only to collapsing in electronic cacophony. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused style begins off moody and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, until fluttering flamenco rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Balance Of Experiment and Accessibility

A key balancing act on Lux is navigating the line between radical innovation and broad accessibility. It is no coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. One track sung entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that feels to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spins upward. This feat gets echoed by another powerful track that grows and constricts, intertwining layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of other breakup anthems, lambasting an ex- lover described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale figure hiding a blade: "Top prize in acting like a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art in an era of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its own built-in excess. This is a deep well of hidden gems that takes time to completely mine but doesn't feels like hard work. Where some major pop albums of the year seemed like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish feast at which the characters at the table, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the profound feeling of soul-shattering sadness, and shared stories about useless men. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
