Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
